Velebit, Croatia

Velebit is the longest (150 km) and largest (2,274km2) mountain in Croatia and as such rich in natural phenomena. On the Velebit mountain has 70 peaks higher than 1600m. Whole massif is raising straight from the sea, on some places very steeply, even with few hundred meter high cliffs and scree slopes. Along the coast there is endless number of smaller bays and coves. We are in one of them. Most of bays are actually mouths of wild gorges that descend steeply from the mountain.

It′s Croatia's most impressive mountain and probably the last wild life resort in this part of Europe. It is preserved form the negative impact of human activities. While walking trails of Velebit mountain you have a chance will meet bears, wild horses and goats, bulls or deers.

Biological diversity, geological structure, wild life and amazing nature with unforgettable views on the coast are just some of the reasons why you should visit Velebit.

Velebit Nature Park

Velebit Nature Park, Croatia

Nearly the whole Velebit, of the area of 200,000 hectares, was declared the Nature Park, and it is by far the largest protected area in Croatia. Within the park there is a whole range of smaller protected areas, including two national parks: Northern Velebit in the Lika-Karlovac region and Paklenica in Dalmatia. Velebit mountain contains many natural sites which rank among the most precious in Croatia. Therefore, the entire mountain, in its full length of about 150 km, has been placed under UNESCO protection as a World Biosphere Reserve, presently the only one in Croatia listed as such. Velebit is not only significant for the total number of various species and its wealth of flora and fauna but for the significant number of endemic species as well. Velebit Nature Park is the richest endemic center of flora and fauna in Croatia.

According to the existing data, there are 1,854 plant taxa on Velebit, 79 of them endemic. Such a large number of endemic taxa is the reason why Velebit is frequently referred to as a “center of endemism” in the region.

Besides its natural values, the cultural heritage of Velebit mountain is equally rich and precious.

Rich cultural heritage which is reflected in the numerous ruins of the cattle huts, the so called “stanovi”, dry stone walls, historic roads (Josephine, Maria Theresa and the Karolinska) bears witness to the life of many past centuries and active living on Velebit. Today they bear witness to the customs and ways to adapt to the harsh living conditions of the population on this, at the same time cruel and mysterious, beautiful mountain. These roads are now transformed into educational trails and represent the best way to discover the natural and cultural-historical value of the Velebit Nature Park.

Step on the Velebit and you're transported 200 years back in the past..

The climate of Velebit varies dramatically over short distances – from the Mediterranean climate in the Velebit Channel, mountain climate on the peaks of the Velebit Mountain and the continental climate in the Lika plateau.
